From the Ground Breaking Ceremony: (as the church bells were
ringing) "The Catholic
Church began in Highland in 1846 which was the date St. Philip
Church was founded. That was the first important date for the
Catholic Community in Highland. Over the next 161 years there have
been a number of important dates. April 17, five years ago tonight
the whistle blew calling firemen to fight the fire that destroyed
St. Anthony Church. Tonight we begin a new chapter in the history of
the Catholics in Highland by breaking ground for the new Ss. Anthony
& Philip Church facility."
Your
presence was appreciated at the Ground Breaking Ceremony Tuesday
evening. Words of thanks are extended to all who helped in any way
at this historical event.

Project Now update:
On Feb.
28th we received the recommendation from the Diocesan Building
Committee to build our new parish facility. That recommendation goes
to the bishop and when he approves it, we can begin building. As you
know, we do not have the funds to build the entire facility. We have
received several alternate bids that can be added to or deducted from the
base bid. This will allow us to pick and choose from these alternates to
establish a project scope that is within our budget. Because of
that, we know what the cost is for each part of the project—at least if it
were built today. The Parish Council and the Finance Committee voted
to build what we can afford with the money we have specified for the
project plus the pledges that were made. This is the plan we took to
the diocese.
Because of
budget restraints, here is what will and will not be built at this time.
Alternatives not included due to budget restraints are: the bell tower and
car port roof, finish layer of blacktop in the parking lot, the entire
wing that houses the offices, and the large restrooms on the church level.
What was a hospitality room off the gathering space will be temporary
offices. There will be two family restrooms on the church level.
In the church, there will be enough pews to seat 400 (less than in St.
Anthony) with space behind them to seat 200 more when funds allow.
All windows will be plain glass. There is carpeting in the aisles
and ceramic tile at the altar area, but under the pews will be colored
concrete (tile under the pews would have to be added later). There
will be an altar, ambo, chair and crucifix (all built by local tradesmen)
and a baptismal font. There is no organ but we will bring over the
electric keyboard.
The lower
level will be accessible by stairs and elevator, and will have large
completed restrooms only. The remaining space will be unfinished.
The kitchen will have rough-in only for appliances and so on. The
only appliances and cabinets that we will have at this time are the ones
brought over from the parish center or are able to obtain from a Wisconsin
company who donates to non-profits. The space for future classrooms
will be provided but left unfinished. The floors throughout this
level, other than in the bathrooms, will be sealed concrete (again tile
could be added later).
Obviously we
would like the lower level to be functional for meals, socials and Rel.
Ed. Classes. Our hope is that as we “put a shovel in the ground”
more funding would come in and we can add these alternatives to the
project. Other alternates could come to fruition if donations,
estates, wills or other sizable gifts were to come in the future.
The blueprints are drawn up and the ability to add all these alternates
are included in the plans. It is the funding of them that prevents
us from including them at this time.
April
17 will be the five year anniversary of the fire at St. Anthony. We
all know it has been a long and difficult journey to get us to this point.
It will truly be a happy day when we can begin building this beautiful
facility. Obviously this is the first phase, but I hope and pray
that this effort will only inspire us to make the entire project a reality
in the near future.

John Houck of McGuire-Peterson-Houck Funeral Home,
Dodgeville, gives another generous donation to Fr. Ken Frisch, Pastor at
Ss. Anthony & Philip Parish, in addition to the one given at the Car Show
& Spaghetti Supper held on Sept. 12. This money will go towards the
building of a new church facility for the Catholic Community of Highland.
