 Hammerschlagen

?? Hammerschlagen is a German game reportedly dating from 1940 in which several contestants try to hammer a nail into a stump. The game is typically played with a Cross-peen hammer or blacksmith's hammer and a large (24-36") cross-section of a soft hardwood. Cottonwood is suitably soft for this game. The hammer must have a wedge-shaped (but not sharp) end on it and should be at least 2.5 pounds. The log is ser up waist high with the flat sides facing the floor and ceiling. A bright common nail is driven about a half inch into the wood in front of each player. Each player's turn consists of setting the wedge-end of the hammer on the log next to their nail and taking a single swing at it. The swing must be done in a smooth up and down motion. Male players must use one hand. Female players may use both hands. Frequently a player will bend their nail in such a way as to make driving it further nearly impossible. In this case, the players may use their turn to make a single-motion swing at the nail from the side in an attempt to straighten the nail. You are not required to stand in the same place for the entire game. Often it is necessary to switch sides of the log to get a better angle on your nail. Play continues to the right and lasts until one player has driven the head of their nail to (or below) the surface of the wood. Each player pays a nominal amount to get into the game ($2) and the winner is rewarded with a small prize or a shot of a German spirit, often Apfelkorn.

Tips from the Pumpkin Patch . . .

Want to grow the heaviest pumpkin for the Oktoberfest Heaviest Pumpkin Contest? We will be providing tips each week to help the new grower as well as the experienced grower.

World record heaviest pumpkin is 1,725 pounds!

Tip #1:
Now is a good time to start those free seeds you received inside your house. To give them a jump start, sand the edges, but not the tip, with an emery board. Sand it just enough to show the light brown line. This helps crack the seed coat and gives it a jump start to germination. Use a seed starter soil mix for best results.

Tip #2: Site selection and prep.  Pick a sunny location to plant your pumpkins with good drainage, and the larger the space the better.  Add manure or compost if needed to make a rich soil.  You can even prewarm the soil in the area by covered it with plastic or a mini greenhouse.  The soil temp should be at least 60 degrees when you transplant your pumpkin plants outdoors.  For more tips visit http://www.greatpumpkincommonwealth.com/.

Tip #3: Transplanting. When the soil temp is over 60 degrees your plant is ready to be transplanted outside. If you have a mini greenhouse set up in the garden, make sure it has good ventilation before you transplant the plant to prevent over heating.  A raised bed or small mound is best to plant in for good drainage. Use a transplant solution of 1 gallon of warm water with light fertilizers. Protect plants on cold nights!

Delicious food was served from the concession stand all weekend long. The kid’s games were really fun – did you check out the kid’s tractor pull that was new this year? We served around 50 meals in the church lower level at 5:30 p.m. The workers, the crowd and music were delightful.

Thank you everyone for your donations of brownies, soda, bottled water, hamburger and ice cream. Workers, we thank you for giving of your time during the weekend.
